We received a petition asking:

"We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to Paganism is the traditional and original belief system of Britain, it should be recognised as a religion once more."

Details of Petition:

"Paganism is a religion that was the backbone of british society for thousands of years, yet people are unwilling to accept us as a part of modern society! We should be recognised as a national religion. Every year there are more of us. please let us be again."

Read the Government's response:-
The Government has no overarching role in regulating or recognising personal belief or faith. The UK has a long held commitment to freedom of worship and belief, and our obligations under the European Convention on Human Rights are incorporated into the Human Rights Act 1998. As such people are free to form religions and free to follow their own practices and beliefs provided they remain within the law.

Morning Seth,
Pagan groups and practices are wide spread in Britain...been to quite a few. Don't really understand the Need for a 'Petition'. Didn't realize 'they' needed OFFICIAL recognition. Maybe you could explain your 'thrust' on this?

I guess basically, I'm against a 'Church' situation...or even the word 'Religion'. These are componets of 'Controlled belief systems', and asssociated with a History of non-individualism. Aside...the very concept of 'Religion/Church' was never framed by ancient Pagan groups/cultures.

*'Religion' destoyes Spituality/'S'
:)

Think that this was more to do with some groups or individuals and the chance to put a petition to No 10 online - so that there is a bit of a recognition that can be printed out to show - "the holier than thou brigade"
that Pagans have as much right (or even more so) to be here as they do.

Hmmm and 'OH' Seth,
Maybe you should let them know...'They don't need anyones approval/permission'. If they're doing it for Recognition...tell them To 'Give it to themselves'. Societal/Cultural things aren't going to change...because Government gives recognition. That's the name of that game.

...And hopefully, they're not doing that/this to recruit people. People 'grow' when they are ready. I do a LOT of Pagan rites/magick/communing with 'Nature Spirits'/etc....but I don't Join anything. To each his/her own/'S' :)
