GeoCities will close later this year.
Why is GeoCities not accepting new customers?
We have decided to discontinue the process of allowing new customers to sign up for GeoCities accounts as we focus on helping our customers explore and build new relationships online in other ways. We will be closing GeoCities later this year.

I'm a GeoCities customer. What's happening to my site?
Existing GeoCities accounts have not changed. You can continue to enjoy your web site and GeoCities services until later this year. You don't need to change a thing right now — we just wanted you to let you know about the closure as soon as possible. We'll provide more details about closing GeoCities and how to save your site data this summer, and we will update the help center with more details at that time.

Will something happen to my GeoCities Free or Plus account?
Later this year we will be closing all GeoCities accounts and web sites. We'll send you more details this summer.

*Yep Seth & All,
...'They've' DONE THIS before on other of their 'Free' Web Site names. Nothing's really Free Huh...especially in the long run?
How will this effect your Sites Seth...and would you continue if 'They' started to Charge for the use?
Yahoo doesn't NOT have an illustrious History of Keeping promises to folks. Know MANY who LOST valuable Sites in the past with Yahoo, and also experienced lots of INTERFERENCE and Non-Recognition of uploading. Carry on screaming. All best cheers/'S'

Hi Sweeps
Depends on charges - or whether there are any more 'free' space sites around - will mean quite alot of uploading to get sites as they were.

Web censorship and freedom of speach come to mind!!!

Definetly Seth,
...It's 'STARTING'. Don't imagine TPTB like people talking/communicating with each other in a free/open style. There are 'Internet' restrictions/access denials...coming down the pipe. Not unexpected in today's climate. Get/keep guns & ammo...join/form 'Militias' dot.dot.dot/'S'

Well I have website, but its on 'paid for' webspace...

The free sites usually base their financial model on paid advertising, and maybe yahoo is not earning enough advertising revenue.

I wonder if their free chat site will eventually close too? What about yahoo email? Oh and Googlemail? Hotmail? Eventually they have bills which must be paid, and if they rely on advertising then during a recession when people are not advertising so their futures may be vulnerable too.

I also agree about the free speech issue, and a dislike of people sharing info freely / building bridges between people based on interests, where geographic location is totally immaterial.

Simon

PS. I am earning a little money from Google, as my website has a google search box where I earn a cent or so from people following leads and clicking on the 'sponsored' search results. As I can see that this is working I'm now planning on signing up to Google adsense too. I also earn money from my films on youtube, as I have submitted them for revenue sharing. The upshot of all this is that within a few weeks from now I expect to receive $100 from Google (albeit converted into GBP £). Of course I will also have to declare this revenue for income tax - which might seem a shame until you factor in expenditure incurred in buying webspace, etc. In short, I'm more likely to get a tax refund than pay income tax on that $100!
