*'Sweeps' NOTE:
…These 'bulbs' are being legislated and FORCED on people worldwide, as part of the Energy Saving Nonsense. It's all apart & parcel of convincing people that THEY are to blame for 'Global Warming'...which doesn't exist/too much wasted energy/& Environmental dis-concern. Don't 'buy it' if YOU value your Mental & Physical health. This is but another example of Big Government Controlling your lives…and leading to 'Globalization' enslavement. It really isn't too 'far fetched' to say you'd need a HasMat-Hazardous Materials Team in your home...in full 'gear' to deal with a broken CFL bulb. Think this is an exaggeration? Think again…read below and watch the great informative Video...at the bottom. Then come back 'Members' with your comments/opinions. Many thanks/'S'

There is 'VERY MUCH' a dark-side to CFLs…the 'so called' energy saving better BULB. CFLs contain approximately 4mg-5 mg of mercury per bulb…or MORE. Mercury can cause many problems when inhaled…and can affect our brains, spinal cords, kidneys and livers.

Now let's take on the report of Brandy Bridges of Prospect Maine: While switching bulbs in her daughter's bedroom, a CFL fell to the floor and shattered in the shag carpeting. Being a knowledgeable consumer, Bridges knew that CFLs were not to be disposed of in same way as traditional bulbs, so she called the store where she bought the bulb.

The man at the store cautioned her not to vacuum the bulb up and to call poison control. She called poison control who then told her to have her home tested for mercury levels, which she did. The only place the mercury levels were reportedly high, was in the room where the bulb had shattered, she was told to call an environmental cleaning crew who gave her a quote of over $2,000 for clean up - which she could not afford. She has now sealed the room in fear.

If you break a bulb: DO NOT VACUUM! Doing so disperses particles even more and then traps the mercury in your vac bag - possibly to be dispersed each time you use your vacuum after that! Keep children and pets away from the ventilated area for at least 15 minutes so vapors can evaporate. Clean up by hand using disposable materials including disposable rubber gloves and a stiff piece of cardboard to collect the pieces by sweeping them onto the board with damp paper towels. Put pieces and cardboard into a sealed plastic bag

Never mind your fillings – check the overhead light.

Research has emerged showing energy-saving, "eco-friendly" compact fluorescent lightbulbs (CFLs) contain up to 9 milligrams of mercury – and could turn landfills into toxic dumps.

A Palmwoods resident Val Paterson learned the hard way after a CFL bulb shattered at her home.

'I have learnt that everyone must leave the room for at least 15 minutes if one falls to the floor and breaks', she said.

'Shards of glass from broken bulbs should be swept away by someone wearing rubber gloves to protect them from the mercury content which can cause a range of problems including migraines and dizziness'.

The Sunshine Coast Environment Council agreed there were concerns, with general manager Ian Christesen warning a Howard government initiative in 2007 to switch to CFLs from incandescent light bulbs nationally may 'not have been thought through'.

'The bulbs carry between 3.5mg and 9 mg of mercury and are not suitable for all domestic situations', he said.

'The U.S. federal government needs to ensure a national program is enacted and funded so they can be recycled and kept out of landfills.

And...sellers should have responsibility for their collection and recycling – they're the ones making the profit, they're the ones to ensure collection is available'.

-Howdy Sweeps AND All,
-You know what's really eerie about this whole thing, especially in Ireland right now?
OK-buy one of these Bulbs, there is NO Warning(s) or any indication on the packaging about Hazards, how to protect yourself/family, where to dispose of it, nor any informational material.
The shorter lived/more reliable, brighter, warmer incanddescent traditional Bulb-is also due to be 'PHASED OUT' here. Unbelievable? Not in Ireland, and 'THEY' are saying possession or USE of the traditional bulbs will be an 'Offense'-presumably punishable by Law. The real ironic thing here, is that the sale of the 'regular' bulbs will be 'illegal'. Imagine? Well I can't-but then when 'THEY' banned smoking in public places I thought for sure there would be outrage and protests. Shows how far 'Society' has been conditioned to Government Edicts and phoney educational/helpful/safety concern for us. The 'SHEEPLE' are sure making it easy for 'real guys and gals' to REVOLT, and 'The Sheeple' won't even mind-take even cursory anyway. So, let's all plan a revolution. Thanks-Captain

Yes its worthwhile reminding people about this - but it is old news.

I even saw this mentioned in the London Daily Telegraph a few years ago - around the same time that the EU announced that it was going to ban ordinary incandescent light bulbs.

btw, as far as I am aware there is no law against using these here, and indeed many people are stocking up with them. But from the end of this month the shops will not be allowed to sell them.

There are alternatives - I understand that halogen lights will still be allowed, and LED lights will soon be available too. The principle reason for the delay with these however seems to be that industry first wants to recoup its tooling costs for CFL's, although there is a secondary issue in their reliability. Ihave a solar powered outdoor LED light unit which went wrong in just a few months (boo hoo).

I've heard of a light which once given electricity will remain illuminated 'for ever', even if not connected to any source of electricity. The lady developing this was given the technical know-how by some friendly people who travel in metallic silver saucer-shaped craft. But she has been 'got at' and after fires, unpleasant nighttime phone calls, etc, so she is holding fire on these new lights.

Simon (who over the years has broken a few CFL's)

ps, mercury, as in the swine flu jab... erm, 'nice'.

Sure Simon,
...Old news. BUT people 'DON'T KNOW THE FACTS ABOUT THEM'. Yep though, you're right about the new LED/etc. replacements coming along.
NOW...so many energy inventions have been 'Hidden'/Undisclosed to the 'general public', I'm sure the 'DAY OF RECKONING is coming. Non too soon either./'S'
