This is an initiative defending free speech in Ireland kick-started by Irish Atheists.

The Irish Constitution contains a "Blasphemy clause" and the Minister for Justice recently updated relevant Blasphemy legislation, criminalizing criticism of religion. This new law was not passed to give protection to Christians and Jews, but to prepare the ground for the legalization of Sharia law in Ireland.
But Mr. Dermot Ahern, Minister for Justice, came under a lot of pressure for his move, and promised to hold a constitutional referendum on the issue. It will then be up to the Irish voters to decide for or against freedom of speech.

*Blasphemy!? What the 'hell is that'. Such a 'thing' makes a mockery of & trashes Civil Liberties/Free speech. It's such an archaic 'throw back' to Mediveal Times...where Religion protected itself with Power/Control over the people. Has NO place in Modern Times, unless the inclusion in law is meant to stamp out individualism/free thinking/& the right to dissent. It is so obsurd...just as much as 'political correctness'...that no wonder folks have no idea what it means in to today's society/culture. I MEAN...do 'they' not even know of the 'separation of Church and State'? We should be able to cast stones at anything, say what's on our minds about any subject, and make choices in the way we talk about thinks. No law can make it any different. It would be the biggest legal joke...just try to enforce anything so irrational as Blasphemy. It's the epitome of 'Big Brother' out of control

It looks like Ireland's Minister for Justice has finally lost the plot completely.........But maybe not. I believe the new "Blasphemy law" has been created to criminalize public opposition to and resistance against the legalization of Sharia law in Ireland via E.U. and U.N..
